Capener Gouges are used to cut, shape, or remove bone. They are typically designed to allow the surgeon to scoop or carve small areas of bone with control. Capener Gouges are used in orthopaedic surgery and sometimes in maxillofacial surgery. The blade of a Capener Gouge is curved and scooped, which allows the surgeon to remove bone in a controlled manner rather than just cutting straight through.
