BARB-E® suture design utilises a dual-angle cut that creates strong anchoring barbs while maintaining the strand’s integrity. Barb-E also has the convenience of a looped end for ease of anchoring.

Lower-cut angle produces barbes with strong anchoring force and the shallow cut-depth preserves the integrity of the strand.

Distinctive Features
The Barb-E® Barbed Suture is designed for internal tissue closure where a long-lasting, absorbable suture is preferred. Combining very high initial tensile strength with excellent pliability, the Barb-E® barbed suture provides smooth passage through tissue with reduced tissue reactivity. Its knotless tissue closure eliminates the need for traditional knots, helping to reduce knot-related complications and infection risks. The barbed design distributes tension more evenly along the suture line, supporting secure and consistent tissue approximation while improving suturing efficiency.

Barb-E® Suture Types
Barb-E® Barbed Sutures are designed to support efficient and controlled tissue approximation. The range includes a uni-directional barbed suture with an end loop and a bi-directional barbed suture with a needle at both ends, providing options to suit different surgical techniques and procedural requirements. The barbs are arranged in a spiral orientation along the suture.
Two configurations: Available as uni-directional with an end loop or bi-directional with needles at both ends.
Spiral barb orientation: Barb-E® features spirally oriented barbs along the suture.

Tensile Strength Retention
Tensile strength retention indicates how well the material maintains its original strength over time. Starting at 8.49 kgf, the material retains 80% of its strength after one week, followed by a more gradual decline over the following weeks. After eight weeks, it retains 46% of its initial tensile strength, demonstrating a progressive reduction in strength over time.
Faster Closure With Barb-E®
A 2024 randomized clinical study found that barbed sutures enabled faster wound closure than conventional smooth sutures. Suturing speed increased from 1.99 cm/min to 2.18 cm/min—an improvement of approximately 9.5%—while overall subcutaneous closure time was also significantly reduced. These findings demonstrate how barbed sutures can help surgeons achieve faster, more efficient wound closure.
